Nancy Murray is a friend, a great parent, an anti-racist (some would say, race traitor), civil libertarian, organizer, educator, scholar and one who shares my view that Palestine was invaded and is now occupied. Through an organization, Middle East Justice Network, which she headed, I was able to travel, with Nancy's youngest daughter, to Israel and Palestine in 1989, staying in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron and the Gaza Refugee Beach Camp, meet with dissident Israelis and Palestinians and report back to the Maine United Methodist Church. Community Change of Boston has a history of sponsoring public education on racism. In 2005, Community Change sponsored a talk (recorded by RFM) by Howard Zinn and Tim White on white racism in Boston and the USA. Murray's presentation could be retitled "Apartheid and Racism in Israel", as she paints a historical, political and sociological portrait of how the Israeli occupation has dehumanized and economically reduced the Palestinians to the status of prisoners living in apartheid states.
Nancy Murray has a BA from Harvard University and a PhD from Oxford University. After teaching for 7 years at the University of Nairobi, Murray directed a nation-wide program to combat racism in the media at London’s Institute of Race Relations, and remains on the editorial committee of its journal, Race & Class. Murray has been an advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people for more than two decades, and has founded and participated in several organizations that seek to change US policy and promote a just solution to the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Murray has authored numerous articles on the occupation and a book, Palestinians: Life Under Occupation. Murray has written a chapter on the post 9/11 profiling of Muslims and Arabs in the award-winning book edited by Elaine Hagopian, Civil Rights in Peril: The Targeting of Arabs and Muslims.
