20.08.03 Popham Beach and the Rescue of a Northern Gannet
Travelled down to Popham Beach on the first Monday of August, near the mid point of summer, for the first visit of the year. Beautiful day, everything is green and blooming, plenty of sunshine and clouds preceding the tropical storm approaching from the south with temps in the 70s. State Park personnel wore masks and beachgoers tended to practice social distancing.
While walking out to Fox Islands at low tide. I encountered a Northern Gannet sitting in a pool of water, not moving, even though about 5 people surrounded the large bird. Two lifeguards and an on-looker slowly and cautiously grabbed the bird and wrapped the daggerlike bill with a towel. After placing the Northern Gannet in a cardboard box, they carted it off the beach to an Avian Haven. According to an on-looker, the life guards were rewarded with fleas from the bird.
Made it out to Fox Islands, but because of my bum leg, I didn't feel like I could climb to the top of the island. Sat down on the north side of the island with my pipe and enjoyed what Mother Nature was displaying.
