1. Peace Vigils at General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine

20.12.19 Advent Peace Vigil at GD/BIW in Bath

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).
14 Maine peace activists attended the Advent Peace Vigil for Disarmament at GD/BIW in Bath on December 19, 2020. Under a sunny blue sky and temps in the 20s, the peace activists gathered across from the GD/BIW administration building at 11:30 AM and marched to the middle employee gate for the shift change..
George and Maureen of Smilin' Trees Disarmament Farm have been handing out leaflets to departing workers since 2015. During that time, I've only seen a few workers take the info leaflet. On this day, I saw more workers take leaflets than all the times before. With retirement and hiring, a whole new generation is beginning to work at GD/BIW, and as a result, the times they are a-changin'.
Returning to the parking lot across from the administration building, the peace activists held a closing circle of forgiveness and renewal while keeping social distance and wearing masks.
The peace vigils are organized by George and Maureen of Smilin' Trees Disarmament Farm in Hope. The Lenten Peace Vigil for Disarmament at GD/BIW in Bath will begin on Ash Wednesday in 2021. Maine peace activists are encouraged to join us.
