1. Peace Vigils at General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine

18.03.31 Lenten Peace Vigil for Disarmament at GD/BIW in Bath

30 Maine peace activists attended the final Lenten Peace Vigil for Disarmament at GD/BIW in Bath on Holy Saturday, March 31, 2018. Bob Klotz of 350 Maine rode his bicycle up from Portland. Mary Kate Small played her accordion and sang a new song, "We're Not Done Yet" for the closing circle. Four young women from Camden High School attended the vigil.
Bruce Gagnon, a former UFW organizer, began a 37 day hunger strike on February 12 in protest of LD 1781, a corporate welfare bill that would give $60 million dollars to General Dynamics. Along the way more than 30 others joined the hunger strike by fasting for a day or more. LD 1781 eventually did pass, but the amount given was amended to $45 million. After passage, GD/BIW management showed their displeasure with the people of Maine for speaking out by laying off Maine workers.
After the vigil, the USS Michael Monsoor, accompanied by tugboats, came up the Kennebec River back to the GD/BIW boat yard after sea trials.
