16.02.13 Lenten Vigil for Disarmament at General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works in Bath
16 Maine peace activists braved a cold, windy Maine winter day to stand in vigil for peace at the General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath on Saturday, February 13, 2016.
On February 12, 1997, six Prince of Peace Plowshares activists poured blood and symbolically disarmed U.S.S. The Sullivans, a nuclear-capable Arleigh Burke-class destroyer at the Bath Iron Works shipyard. All six were eventually convicted of destruction of government property and conspiracy.
After being arrested in Bath, Father Phil Berrigan and the other activists were taken to Portland to be incarcerated in the Cumberland County Jail. Sheriff Mark Dion informed Father Phil Berrigan that he could make only one call out, but could receive as many calls as he wanted. Being the pre-internet days of the 90s, Father Phil Berrigan called yours truly, The Maine Paparazzi, and asked me to contact the alternative media about his action and arrest. Being the big, loud mouth that I am, the word was spread far and wide, and Father Phil Berrigan spent the day on the phone giving interviews.
