15.11.28 Advent Vigil for Disarmament at GD/BIW in Bath
Smilin’ Trees Disarmament Farm of Hope and Global Network held the first Advent Vigil for Disarmament on Saturday, November 28, 2015 beginning at 11:30 AM to stand against the building of warships at General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works. Over 20 Maine peace activists, including two Augusta Women in Black supporters, gathered across from the Administration Building on Washington Street holding signs and banners, and then marched to the plant gate to leaflet workers at shift change.
Advent is the season in which we prepare for peace and it is not possible to continue to build these warships and at the same time create a disarmed world. As Pope Francis has said "Even today we raise our hand against our brother… We have perfected our weapons, our conscience has fallen asleep, and we have sharpened our ideas to justify ourselves as if it were normal we continue to sow destruction, pain, death. Violence and war lead only to death."
