15.03.21 Lenten Vigil at GD/BIW in Bath
Global Network hosts a weekly Peace Vigil on Saturday at 11:30 AM during Lent outside the gates of the General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath.
Over 50 people gathered in a light spring snow outside the gates of the General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works shipyard to call for conversion of the war-based economy of Maine and the U.S.
Paco Michelson and Hee Eun "Silver" Park, activists recently returned from Jeju Island, South Korea, talked about where the Aegis destroyers built at GD/BIW go, and about the destruction of a UNESCO World Heritage Site soft coral reef to build a port big enough for them, empathizing that Korean villagers just want to live, farm and fish and that they do not hate GD/BIW workers or consider them enemies.
CODEPINK presented a skit, Canteen Annie at the Bomb Factory, based on Bertolt Brecht's play Mother Courage and Her Children, with the theme of what a war-based economy does to families. Bruce Gagnon of Global Network Against Nuclear Weapons and Power in Space spoke about U.S. militarism around the globe and its costs.
Maureen Kehoe-Ostensen of the Smilin' Trees Disarmament Farm organized a series of Lenten vigils at GD/BIW. She reminded folks that it was now spring, and that under the ground were bulbs and other plants waiting to emerge; she said we should remember our vigils are also the seed.
