15.03.07 Lenten Vigil at GD/BIW in Bath
Global Network hosts a weekly Peace Vigil on Saturday at 11:30 AM during Lent outside the gates of the General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath.
At the March 7 Peace Rally, my old friend Bill Slavick, former USM Professor and Pax Christi activist, was present with a bright orange sign shouting out America's moral dilemma. At my request, Bill wrote this poem the next day.
O say can you see by Maine's wan winter light,
What so proudly we hail at empire's last gleaming,
Yet another Aegis destroyer to join in the fight--
In our Pacific pivot of militarism's preening?
And the bluster's hot air, hardly ruffling a hair,
Proof through the night that propaganda is still there;
O say does our blood-splattered banner yet wave
Oer citizen protests, Earth's future to save?
