15.07.19 Houston Brook Falls in Summer
Take 201 North to Bingham, turn onto 16 West, cross the Kennebec River, turn right to Concord and follow the road to the Pleasant Ridge Plantation Transfer Station, where parking is available. Follow the 1/4 mile downhill trail to the 32-foot nearly-vertical drop of Houston Brook Falls.
The falls are wild and rugged, with every outcrop of folded rock having a jagged appearance. There are a few notable swimming spots, the best being the shallow rectangular channel just below the falls. During low-water, it is a simple task to enter this pool, but, in high water, the difficulty multiplies. The mist of the falls often makes the surrounding rocks too dangerous to scramble across.
Just downstream, the brook terminates at Wyman Lake, which is visible from the waterfall. The best time to visit this waterfall appears to be in the morning, as they have eastern exposure and are lit up by the sun in the early hours of the day.
