20.06.19 Liberate Cannabis from Corporate Control Demonstration at Wellness Connection Dispensary in Gardiner
Led by cannabis and CBD activist Dawson Julia of Unity, the Maine Cannabis Coalition staged four protests at Wellness Connection of Maine dispensaries in Brewer, Gardiner, Portland and South Portland on June. Wellness Connection represents half of Maine’s registered dispensaries. The company is owned by out-of-state investors that also control two of Maine’s other dispensaries.
"For too many years we have watched as these clowns continue to use our government as a weapon against the small cannabis caregivers and processors of Maine. In 2017 they wrote bills like LD 1491 where dispensaries would be able to sell adult use cannabis immediately while caregivers wait for the government to finish the laws and rules. This year LD 2052 would have outlawed vape products throughout the state except that dispensaries would be exempt while caregivers not. They also tried last month to implement $100,000 fines, DEA enforcement in the Office of Marijuana policy and strict expensive mandatory FDA nutritional label laws. Historically for years Wellness Connection has fought for stupid laws and regulations against caregivers like the 1 employee max law, no caregiver to caregiver sales law, no more than 5 patient law, no collective law and too many more to list. So now we see Wellness Connection trying to sue our state government because they cant use more than 49% of their wallstreet funds in Maine so they need residency laws removed. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! We are sick and tired of having our government continue to be used as a weapon against small local owned caregiver and processor businesses. It is time to call them all out!!!"
A Liberate Cannabis from Corporate Control Demonstration was held in front of the Wellness Connection Dispensary in Gardiner on June 19, under a 90+ degree mid-day sun at the beginning of summer. Amidst construction equipment and debris, over 25 hardly Maine cannabis activists expressed their displeasure at the continuing onslaught by Wellness Connection Dispensary to strip them of their rights to grow, market and consume medical cannabis.
Joey Blaze brought the Hive Medicinal bullhorn and started encouraging passers-by to "Buy Local". In the midst of the mid-day sun, the heat and the gas fumes, the Cupcake Lady walked across the street and gave me a pre-roll. That's what I call Nirvana.
After two hours, I left for my air-conditioned apartment. Some cannabis activists stayed until 4 PM.
