18.08.10-12 Mad Dog's Trip to New York City
Travelled to New York City on August 9-12 as an elected delegate to the Delegate Assembly of the National Writers Union/UAW Local 1981.
Caught the Concord bus out of Portland and arrived in the Big Apple six hours later. The bus had a single seat on one side and a double on the other, plenty of legroom, plus there was a stand-up lounge in the back with free water, juice and snacks. The bus arrives at a municipal bus stop on 42nd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Caught a cab to the Holiday Inn on 8th Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets. 45 minutes and $23 later I arrived at the Holiday Inn, located right in the Garment District. Staying on the backside of the 21st floor, I could view the Garment District sweatshops.
On Friday, I met my buddy Joe Friendly, who arrived on a Citibike, and started to search for the Central Park bench named after my friend, Chuck Young. We found the bench at the 93rd Street west side entrance. The inscription on the bench reads

"Cadillacs for Everyone"
Joe and I continued on uptown to 72nd Street where Strawberry Fields is located. Strawberry Fields was officially dedicated on October 9, 1985, the 45th anniversary of Lennon's birth. Yoko Ono Lennon, worked with landscape architect Bruce Kelly and Central Park Conservancy to create a meditative spot. The mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and given as a gift by the city of Naples. Based on a Greco-Roman design, it bears the word of a Lennon song: Imagine.
On Saturday night, less than a block from Times Square, I stumbled across the Weed World Candies RV selling goodies to the public. Times Square has changed during the last decade, but it's still a hoot.
