22.01.16 MMCM Home Grown Maine at Augusta Civic Center
The second day of Home Grown Maine, the annual Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine trade show, was held at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday, January 16, 2022. Another cold day and the continuing Covid Crisis kept attendance low. About 250 hearty Maine cannabis fans visited the 30 plus vendors the final day of the weekend event.
Civil Rights Attorney and Maine State Rep Lynne Williams spoke about the misuse of power by the Maine Office of Marijuana Policy (OMP) in the creation of rules and regulations for medical cannabis caregivers. "OMP may state that they are required to make the rules changes they have proposed in order to comport with the most recent statutory changes. There are categories of
rules changes that they must make, but there is nothing in the statutes that requires the draconian rules that they have proposed, the outrageously expansive and expensive security systems or the use of an out-of-state provider of an outrageously costly security system. And there is certainly nothing in those statutory changes that requires OMP to retain out of state, corporate consultants, who gear all of their recommendations towards accommodating large corporate cannabis businesses from out of state. We need to stop these rules changes which will ultimately destroy hundreds, if not thousands, of small businesses in our state."
Eric McMaster, owner of Tru Blooms, spoke about methods of ingestion. "Inhalation (smoking and vaporizing) and ingestion are most common. All consumption methods involve heating the plant's THCA to decarboxylate it into THC, either at the time of consumption or during preparation. Salves and absorption through the skin (transdermal) are increasingly common in medical uses, both of CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids. Each method leads to subtly different psychoactive effects due to the THC and other chemicals being activated, and then consumed through different administration routes. It is generally considered that smoking, which includes combustion toxins, comes on quickly but lasts for a short period of time, while eating delays the onset of effect but the duration of effect is typically longer."
At the end of the day, MMCM held a raffle and vendors handed out free samples before packing up to head home. Plans are underway to hold another Home Grown Maine on August 12-14 of this year.
