19.02.09 US Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl
Traveled to the US Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl on February 9, 2019. A bright, sunny winter day, but a west wind 18 to 24 MPH created wind chill values as low as 1°F. I didn't wear enough layers and could only last about an hour in the cold. Missed the two and three person racing, but arrived in time for the four person teams. 10 seconds is a good time for a run. The finish line is on a frozen Hosmer Pond.
I was impressed with the outdoor village set up before the line of toboggan riders and the iced chute for the traditional wooden toboggan racing. The original toboggan chute dates back to 1937 and in 1991, it was officially dedicated as the Jack R. Williams Toboggan Chute and the first U.S. National Toboggan Championships were held. The Toboggan Nationals is an event created by Williams and then-Camden Parks and Recreation Director Ken Bailey. Still going strong, the Toboggan Nationals boasts a field of a maximum of 425 teams, nearly 1,300 racers and more than 6,000 spectators over three days of spirited competition. This event makes the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area a great place to be each February.
