1. Art in Maine

16.01.20 100 sq ft of Copper from the State House Dome

On a very cold and blustery Maine winter day, metalsmith and artist Roxanne Munksgaard, along with apprentice, Bobbie Gamble, traveled from Bangor to the Maine Statehouse in Augusta. Their mission was to purchase and pick up 100 square feet MORE of old copper -- green, sharp, dirty pieces of copper (some with nails) -- the former dome of the Statehouse. One persons trash is another's treasure -- the patinas are gorgeous!
Maine Jewelry & Art Gallery and Studios, co-owned by Munksgaard and business partners, Anne Reigstad and Amanda Coburn, specialize in historical copper. In 2014 they created art jewelry from the former roof of the Bangor Public Library, as a fundraiser to benefit the library's renovation. This December the gallery revealed a collection from the 105 year old former dome of the Maine Statehouse -- unique, one-of-a-kind art pieces, many stamped with ME 1910 (date of copper roof installation).
Jewelry and accessories can be purchased online at etsy.com/shop/MaineJewelryandArt, or at their brick and mortar location, 100 Harlow Street, Downtown Bangor. The gallery features art and artisan goods handcrafted by over 45 Maine artists. http://www.mainejewelryart.com
