15.11.16 Maine Statehouse Copper Roof Lives On
On Monday morning, November 16, 2015, artist Roxanne Munksgaard of Bangor, Maine, traversed to Augusta to purchase old copper from the Maine Statehouse dome. And on Tuesday, pieces of jewelry were already being created from the copper roof!
Munksgaard is no stranger to working with old copper. As the co-owner of Maine Jewelry & Art Gallery/Studios in Downtown Bangor, along with her business partners Anne Reigstad, Amanda Coburn, they have created over 1500 pieces of jewelry and accessories from the 103-year-old copper roof of the Bangor Public Library. The gallery has donated almost $30,000 dollars directly to the library renovations in this community fundraiser so far.
Munksgaard is the first to receive a large shipment of the raw copper. “It gives me great joy to own the old copper of the Statehouse. It has special meaning for me as several of my former political jobs were based in Augusta. I spent many hours in the Statehouse, roaming the halls, talking with legislators, and leading up rallies in the Great Hall of Flags, all while raising three young children in Bangor.“
The 105-year-old green patinated copper is being disbursed by Grant Pennoyer, Executive Director of the Legislative Council. The old copper Maine Statehouse roof was installed during the years 1909-1910. In a major scaffolding project, the new copper roof was replaced in 2014.
Maine Jewelry & Art will unveil the Maine Statehouse Copper Collection on December 4, 2015 at their annual Holiday Open House from 4-8 pm. Items for purchase will be available in their brick and mortar location, 100 Harlow Street, Downtown Bangor, and on their online Etsy store: etsy.com/shop/MaineJewelryandArt
“The huge community response to our library roof project is so heartwarming. We have sold our pieces all over the country and internationally as well, being sure to collect the amazing personal stories. Now we are excited to be able to offer people from all over Maine a little piece of home,” says Munksgaard. For more information, call 941-8600 or go to http://www.mainejewelryart.com
